Trail running on Table Mountain

After ten years in biathlon, Dominic Schmuck ended his active career at the end of April 2024. He quickly realized that sport is and will remain an important part of his life. In search of new experiences, the answer was surprisingly clear to him: trail running. A personal account of a new sporting challenge.

The decisive moment came at the UTMB in Chamonix, where I had the opportunity to accompany my friend Hannes Namberger. The atmosphere, the power of nature, and Hannes' incredible performance made me want to try it myself.

The plan was quickly made: a trail run on Table Mountain in South Africa—35 kilometers, 2,000 meters of elevation gain. South Africa – it just felt right. My girlfriend Lena and I had been there two years ago, and we had been deeply impressed by the beauty of nature, the warmth of the people, and the cuisine. When Hannes planned his last race of the season there, I didn't have to think twice.

Preparation. A balancing act between everyday life and passion.

Preparing for the Table Mountain Run was completely new to me. Juggling work and training wasn't always easy. That's why I focused on specific highlights: my first 30-kilometer run from Siegsdorf over the Rötlwandkopf and Hochfelln to Ruhpolding, or intensive intervals on the Unternberg in Ruhpolding. I often ran early in the morning or after work – equipped with my Maloja trail running collection, which was a reliable companion from the very first step. The ReckmoosM. trail running pants and the SonnkogelM. shirt in particular impressed me with their perfect freedom of movement and breathability. The HaselwandM. jacket also delivered what it promised – reliable protection in changing conditions in the mountains.

The day of the race

November 24 was the big day. The starting signal was given at 6 a.m., the sun rose, and nervousness gave way to pure anticipation. The route was challenging: two long climbs, technical passages, and breathtaking views of Table Mountain, plus temperatures around 82 degrees Fahrenheit. But every kilometer was an experience—enhanced by the support of Lena and my friends, who were waiting for me at the aid stations. After just under 4 hours and 50 minutes, I crossed the finish line after a great adventure and a new, wonderful experience.

What I learned

This race was more than just a competition. Trail running offers a deep connection to nature and to yourself. You get to know yourself and your surroundings in a new way.

My three biggest lessons?

1. Fun is the most important thing – just run!

2. Start smart! I originally wanted to register for the 55 km run. But after Hannes advised me to “start with something shorter,” I changed my mind. From kilometer 25 onwards, I was glad I did.

3. Good equipment provides that extra bit of motivation and fun!

Looking ahead

One thing is certain: trail running has captivated me and I am looking forward to the next adventure – maybe the 55 km. We'll see.

A huge thank you to Maloja! You were there from the start. Your equipment not only worked – it made the experience perfect for me. Here's to many more trails together!
