THE STORY BEHIND MALOJA
CHASING POWDER, FINDING MALOJA
The idea of creating an outdoor brand called Maloja was born on a perfect winter day in the Engadin mountains.
We came across a photo online of a snowboarder soaring through fresh powder, with a simple caption: “Maloja.” Intrigued by the name, we knew we had to visit this place and that day in the mountains shaped the heart of our brand.
MALOJA: THE EPITOME OF GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL
Maloja quickly became a phrase among our friends for anything heartfelt, true, and beautiful. Good food, a perfect trail, or a fleeting moment – it was all Maloja. That simple moment at the rope tow showed us the joy of going your own way. Creating a perfect day only takes courage, imagination, and good friends. When we launched our brand in 2004, we drew inspiration from that unforgettable day in 2001 – and it felt natural to name it Maloja. For us, life is simply “Maloja.”
THE COLLECTION
New year, new theme – Maloja has always done it this way. Since 2004, our 18 collections have taken us across the globe, each one sparking fresh inspiration and a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
From exploring the Japanese “wabi-sabi” philosophy in Alpen Way 2018, to chasing Rock ‘n’ Roll in Oregon, and immersing ourselves in the mountains and culture of Morocco, every collection brings stories, experiences, and unforgettable moments to life. The 2013 Pachamama collection led us deep into the Andes, where every challenge taught us to smile, embrace giving, and connect with people and culture. In 2012, HiSociety took us to remote South Tyrolean farms, where we witnessed the dedication behind every harvest and the beauty of simple, honest work. For our Endless Riding collection, we headed to Norway, where summer days stretched from 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. – though long daylight doesn’t always mean sunshine.
Every collection reflects the unique experiences we’ve gathered over the years. Our spirit of discovery remains alive and will continue to drive us into the future.

WORKING AT MALOJA
Maloja is based in a renovated farmhouse in Chiemgau with views of the Kampenwand, surrounded by meadows, forests, and grazing Charolais cattle and Blacknose sheep. Daily life is simple and community-focused: at noon, our cooks Waltraud and Matthias serve lunch made from regional, often vegetarian ingredients.
Much of our furniture and materials are thrifted or recycled—from desks made of old hay loft floorboards to trade fair stands built from a colleague’s barn. We prioritize working with local businesses whenever possible, hiring neighborhood carpenters and local print shops instead of large providers.
At Maloja, simplicity, sustainability and short distances are at the heart of everything we do.
